Douglas
W. Brown, M.D. |
Sports Medicine and Arthroscopic Surgery
A
native of Waterville, Dr. Brown graduated from Bowdoin College (’68), and the
University of Vermont (UVM) College of Medicine (’72). After a surgical
internship in Rochester, NY, and orthopaedic residency at the UVM, he
completed fellowships in sports medicine both at UVM and the Sports Medicine
Clinic in Atlanta. Prior to moving to Portland in 1980, he served as a LCDR
in the U.S. Navy and as team physician at the U.S. Naval Academy and
orthopaedic surgeon at the Naval Hospital in Annapolis. In the field of
sports medicine, Dr. Brown has been the team physician for Portland High
School since 1980, a team physician for the US Olympic Committee (USOC), and
a team physician for U.S. Soccer. Over 15 years he has traveled to 24
countries to cover over 40 international soccer matches, including the (Men’s)
World Cup in Italy in1990. In 1993 he was appointed the Women’s National Team
head team physician, and he has covered numerous international matches with
that team, including two World Cups (Sweden ’85 - Bronze Medal & USA ’99 -
Gold Medal). He has also been a member of the US Soccer Medical Committee
since 1988, and in 2002 helped organize and develop the first-ever
International Soccer Sports Medicine symposium jointly sponsored by FIFA, US
Soccer, and the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM).
Dr Brown has been a active member of AOSSM since 1981, and has served on the
Board of Directors (’89-’01); as Treasurer (’92-’96), and as President
(’98-’99). Since 2001, he has also been a member of the Board of Trustees and
Treasurer of the American Journal of Sports Medicine. Since 1985, Dr. Brown
has also been a member of the Herodicus Society, an international sports
medicine research organization, and was President in 1998. His research
interests have included post-operative pain management and ACL reconstruction,
and he has published articles and presented papers in these areas nationally
and internationally. He has been a Fellow of the American Academy of
Orthopaedic Surgeons since 1979 and a member of the Arthroscopy Association of
North America (AANA) since 1982. Dr. Brown
is the senior founding partner of Orthopaedic Associates of Portland.

William
M. Heinz, M.D. |
Sports Medicine Medical Orthopaedist
Dr. Heinz is a
medical orthopaedist who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of
sports-related musculoskeletal injuries. He received his undergraduate degree
from Purdue University (Indiana) and then graduated from Indiana University
School of Medicine (Indiana). He completed his residency in internal medicine
and then went on to perform a fellowship in primary care sports medicine,
where he subspecialized in shoulder injuries. He holds a Certificate of Added
Qualification in Sports Medicine. He is the team physician for the Portland
Sea Dogs and a team physician for U.S. Soccer. He is also the company
physician for the Portland Ballet and the orthopaedic consultant for Bridgton
Academy, Gould Academy and Deering High School.

Thomas
F. Murray, Jr., M.D. |
Sports
Medicine and Arthroscopic Surgery
Dr. Murray graduated from Springfield College (Massachusetts) with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in physical therapy. After working briefly as a sports physical therapist, he graduated from the University of Connecticut’s School of Medicine. Dr. Murray completed his orthopaedic surgical residency at UCONN and then completed a one-year sports medicine and arthroscopy fellowship at the Southern California Orthopaedic Institute. Dr. Murray has published and lectured internationally on a variety of shoulder and knee topics. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthoapedic Surgeons and an active member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine. Dr. Murray has served on the Executive Committee of the Maine Society of Orthopaedic Surgeons, including serving as President of the organization for two years. He has also served as the Medical Director and the Interim Managing Partner at Orthopaedic Associates. Currently Dr. Murray is a member of the Board of Councilors for the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine. He has served as an orthopaedic sports medicine consultant for the Portland Pirates AHL Hockey Club, the Maine Medical Center Sports Medicine Fellowship Program, and the University of Southern Maine Athletic Department.

Eric
D. Hoffman, M.D. |
Sports Medicine and Arthroscopic Surgery
Dr. Hoffman graduated from the University of Washington in Seattle and Duke University School of Medicine. He served his general surgery and orthopaedic surgery residency training at Duke University, rotating through all disciplines of orthopaedic surgery. Shortly afterward, he was awarded a clinical traveling fellowship from the Carolina Orthopaedic Research Foundation and spent time providing orthopaedic care in Nepal. Prior to his joining Orthopaedic Associates in 1998, Dr. Hoffman practiced general orthopaedics and sports medicine in southern New Hampshire. He practices orthopaedic sports medicine with a special interest in arthroscopic treatment of knee and shoulder injuries. He is the team physician for Falmouth High School, consultant for other local high schools and Sunday River Ski Resort, as well as an instructor for the Maine Medical Center Sports Medicine Fellowship Program. He is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons and is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Dr. Hoffman has a Subspecialty Certificate in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine from the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is active in many sports including triathlons and is a 2007 Ironman Lake Placid finisher.

D. Scott Marr, M.D. |
Sports Medicine and
Medical Orthopaedics
Dr. Marr graduated from Dartmouth College and the University of Massachusetts
School of Medicine. After serving his residency in family medicine at Maine
Medical Center, he completed a fellowship in primary care sports medicine.
Dr. Marr holds a Certificate of Added Qualifications in Sports Medicine. He is
an active member of the American College of Sports Medicine and the American
Medical Society for Sports Medicine. Dr. Marr has served as a team physician
for St. Joseph’s College, Windham High School and the Portland Pirates (AHL)
hockey team. Dr. Marr has a special interest in elite endurance athletics
including performance physiology and injury prevention.

Benjamin H. Huffard, M.D. |
Sports Medicine and Arthroscopic Surgery
Dr. Benjamin Huffard graduated from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania with a Bachelor's of Science degree in Civil
Engineering in 1991. After three years as a Project Manager for Beacon Construction Companies, he changed his career direction and
completed the post-baccalaureate premedical program at Yale University in 1996. From 1996-1997, Dr. Huffard served as a Research Assistant at the Young-Penny
Laboratory in Boston. He then attended the Yale University School of Medicine, receiving his MD in 2001. Subsequently, Dr. Huffard completed his internship in General
Surgery at New York Hospital in 2002 and his Orthopaedic Surgical Residency at the Hospital of Special Surgery in 2006. He spent a year as a sports medicine fellow
at the Stedman Hawkins Clinic in Vail, Colorado, training with Dr. Marc Philippon on minimally invasive and arthroscopic treatment of soft tissue injuries about the hip. Dr.
Huffard specializes in arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder, knee and hip. Dr. Huffard has published research papers on minimally invasive treatment of Achilles
tendon ruptures, and arthroscopic treatment of full thickness articular cartilage injuries of the shoulder. He is a candidate member of the American Academy of
Orthopedic Surgeons.

Lucien R. Ouellette, M.D. |
Sports Medicine
Dr. Ouellette graduated from Springfield College in
Springfield, Massachusetts and completed his medical training at the
University of Vermont College of Medicine. He completed a Pediatric
Internship in Portsmouth, Virginia, with the United States Navy. Upon
completion of that internship he served four years of active duty as a
physician with the United States Marine Corps. He then returned to his home
state of Maine to complete his Pediatric Residency and a Primary Care Sports
Medicine Fellowship program. Dr. Ouellette works at Orthopaedic Associates
of Portland on a part-time basis. He is currently assisting with team
physician coverage for the Portland Pirates (AHL). Dr. Ouellette is a
member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Sports
Medicine, the American Medical Society of Sports Medicine and the Maine
Medical Association. In his leisure time Dr. Ouellette is an avid swimmer,
runner, and part-time golfer.

William W. Dexter, M.D. |
Sports Medicine Medical Orthopaedist
After
graduation from Dartmouth College (New Hampshire), Dr. Dexter received his
medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia. He completed his family
practice residency at Maine Medical Center, following which he completed a
fellowship in sports medicine at Hennepin County Medical Center (Minnesota).
Dr. Dexter is board-certified in both family practice and sports medicine. He
works at the Sports Medicine Center of Orthopaedic Associates on a part-time
basis and is the Director of Sports Medicine and assistant director of the
Family Practice Residency Program at Maine Medical Center. Dr. Dexter is very
active in the American College of Sports Medicine as well as the American
Medical Society for Sports Medicine. Hi is on the faculty of the University of
Vermont School of Medicine, serves as team physician for the University of
Southern Maine Huskies, Portland Pirates (AHL) and Cheverus High School, and
is on the Maine Governor’s Council for Physical Fitness and Sports. He has
published numerous book chapters and articles on different aspects of sports
medicine and serves on several editorial boards of sports medicine journals.
Dr. Dexter has more than a passing interest in rugby, having been a national
team trialist; he now referees and is an avid skier, hiker, occasional
duathlete and a hack golfer.

John R. Hatzenbuehler, M.D.
Dr. Hatzenbuehler is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, IN. He received his medical degree from the University of Washington, Seattle, WA.
Dr. Hatzenbuehler completed his residency training at Maine Medical Center, Portland, ME., and is currently a sports medicine fellow at Maine Medical Center through
the department of Family Medicine in collaboration with Orthopaedic Associates. He serves as the team physician for Bonny Eagle High School, and assists with the
University of Southern Maine and the Portland Pirates (AHL). Dr Hatzenbuehler is also a medical director for the Maine Marathon and also provides coverage for the
Lake Placid Ironman and Beach to Beacon events.

Dirk G. Asherman, M.D. |
Foot & Ankle Surgery
Dr. Asherman
is a board certified orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in foot and ankle
surgery. A native of Yarmouth, Maine, he graduated from Bowdoin College and
Tufts University School of Medicine (Boston). Dr. Asherman completed his
general surgery internship and orthopaedic residency at Dartmouth Hitchcock
Medical Center (New Hampshire), where he worked extensively with the Dartmouth
College athletic program. He completed a fellowship in foot and ankle surgery
at the University of Texas Medical Branch. Dr. Asherman has published and
lectured on traumatic injuries of the foot and ankle and is a member of the
American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Orthopaedic Foot and
Ankle Society.
