Douglas W. Brown, M.D.

Sports Medicine and Arthroscopic Surgery

A native of Waterville, Dr. Brown graduated from Phillips Andover (’64), Bowdoin College (’68), and the University of Vermont (UVM) College of Medicine (’72). Dr. Brown was captain of both hockey and baseball teams at Andover, and the hockey team at Bowdoin. After orthopaedic residency at the UVM, he completed a fellowship in sports medicine at the Sports Medicine Clinic in Atlanta. Prior to moving to Portland in 1980, he served as a LCDR in the U.S. Navy and as team physician at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis. In the field of sports medicine, Dr. Brown has been the team physician for Portland High School, and an orthopaedic consultant to Bowdoin College since 1980, a volunteer team physician for the US Olympic Committee at the National Sports Festival (’82) and World University Games in Japan (’85). In 1986, he began an association with US Soccer, serving as a team physician for the U16, U20, U23, Men’s Olympic, and Men’s National Teams. Over 15 years he traveled to 24 countries to cover over 40 international matches, including the Men’s World Cup in Italy in1990. In 1993, he was appointed head team physician for the Women’s National Team, and he covered numerous international matches and two World Cups - Sweden ’85 (Bronze Medal) and USA ’99 (Gold Medal). He has been a member of the US Soccer Medical Committee since 1988, and in 2002, helped organize the first international soccer sports medicine symposium jointly sponsored by FIFA, US Soccer, and the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM). Dr Brown has been a active member of AOSSM since 1981; has served on the Board of Directors (’89-’01); as Treasurer (’92-’96), and as President (’98-’99) (www.sportsmed.org). Since 2001, he has also been on the board of trustees and is now chairman of the Medical Publishing Group of AOSSM, which is responsible for publishing the American Journal of Sports Medicine (ajs.sagepub.com) and Sports Health. In 2008, he was selected to be the honorary godfather to the AOSSM traveling fellowship tour to Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, and Thailand. Dr. Brown has also been a member of the Herodicus Society, an international sports medicine research organization since 1985, and was president in 1998. His research interests have included post-operative pain management and ACL reconstruction, and he has published articles and presented papers in these areas nationally and internationally. He has also written book chapters on the role of the team physician in international competition, and was a contributing author for ‘The Champion Within - Training for Excellence’ edited by Lauren Gregg, former assistant coach of the US Women’s National Soccer Team. In 2009, Dr. Brown received the Easter Athletic Trainers Association’s David G. Moyer award for his contributions to sports medicine and the profession of athletic training. Dr. Brown is the senior founding partner of Orthopaedic Associates of Portland.
