Performance Physiology Testing

Looking for that edge this season against your competition or just looking to improve on past performances? Then physiologic testing under the guidance of our Medical Director may be what you need. We offer a variety of performance testing for running and cycling. These tests will help pinpoint your individual training zones either based on power or heart rate. Physiological testing also allows an athlete to identify weaknesses and monitor the effectiveness of a training program.

VO2max Test - ($125)
This test gives a good picture of overall aerobic fitness level and performance potential. This test allows us to provide heart rates and power or speed values for an athlete's ventilatory anaerobic threshold (a good estimate of lactate threshold) to assist in targeting training zones. Knowing one’s lactate threshold as a percentage of VO2max is quite helpful in predicting and monitoring training improvements. The higher the percentage, the more likely you are to succeed in endurance events.

VO2max Test with Exercise Metabolic Rate (EMR) - ($175)
Cardiopulmonary testing allows an analysis of substrate utilization for energy production. This can be very useful for endurance athletes in determining whether they are optimizing fat versus carbohydrate use during training and racing. Different intensities stimulate the development or increased capacity of different energy systems. EMR analysis will help target your training to optimize your energy utilization.

Lactate Threshold Profile Test - ($150)
The lactate profile test is the gold standard used by endurance athletes (e.g. cycling, cross-country skiing, rowing, speed skating, triathlons and running) to determine optimal training intensities. It is the most effective way to track the progress of training. After determining a lactate profile, we will provide accurate training zones based on both heart rate and wattage.

Maximal Lactate Steady State (Lactate Confirmation Test) - ($125)
Once your lactate profile has been estimated using a Lactate Threshold test or Cardiopulmonary testing during a VO2max test, further testing can be done to confirm and fine-tune your target training zones. This will help you improve your training efficiency and allow for accurate follow-up testing to monitor training improvements.

Wingate (Anaerobic power) Test - ($60)
Short, high-intensity efforts that require high power or speed (such as sprinting) depend on anaerobic energy production. The Wingate test provides a way to measure an individual’s peak and average power as well as their ability to maintain that power over a short 30 sec interval such as in a sprint.

  • All physiology test sessions include results consultation.
  • Serial testing (several times each year) gives you valuable information about your training program.
  • Repeat test discounts are available
  • Discounted prices are available for teams and groups of 4 or more.
  • For VO2max tests a 12-Lead EKG is recorded for men 45 years or older, women 55 years or older, or for people who have significant risk factors for coronary heart disease (hypertension, family history, smoking, diabetes, etc.) Results are read and interpreted by our Medical Director. There is an additional $65 fee for this.
